Wildfire

United States of America

On 10 August 2023, the White House, President of the United States of America, declared that a major disaster exists in the State of Hawaii, ordering Federal aid to supplement state and local recovery efforts in the areas affected by wildfires that began 8 August and are ongoing. The President’s action makes Federal funding available to affected individuals in Maui County. On 9 August, the State of Hawaii Emergency Management Agency (EMA) had published the Governor of Hawaii’s third proclamation relating to the wildfires, declaring a state of emergency was declared on 8 August in the counties of Maui and Hawai’i and on 9 August was extended to the whole State. The wildfires have burned thousands of acres, cut off communications and forced closure of roads and schools, and evacuations in the Kohala Rachn, Kula, and Lahaina areas, at the time at least six deaths were reported. As of 10 August, media is reporting 36 deaths, thousands of evacuations, five opened shelters in Maui, and more than 270 structures were damaged or destroyed. The reports are available from: White HouseHawaii EMAAP News, and BBC
