Hurricane Iota Update

On 22 November 2020, the Guatemala National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (CONRED) reported that 383,613 people were affected by Hurricane Iota, reflecting an increase of 208,662 persons since the 20 November report. There were 27,158 people evacuated (10,349 increase) and 7,268 have been sheltered (3,710 increase) in centers that comply with the hygiene standards established in response to COVID-19. Additionally, 4,847 homes were damaged (2,164 increase), and 54 roads (37 increase) and 26 bridges (22 increase) were affected. In Honduras, media reported that over 100,000 people were affected by Hurricane Iota and 16 people have died. In Colombia, media reported that 61,700 people were left homeless and 26 people due to the passage of Hurricane Iota. Additionally, 22,000 homes sustained total or partial damages, reflecting an increase of 21,997 damaged homes since the 19 November report. Landslide Alert

On 21 November 2020, media reported that 23 of 27 municipalities of Caldas were at risk of landslides and 18 of the 27 municipalities were on orange alert due to ongoing heavy rains. An orange alert is was reported in for the municipalities of Aguadas, Filadelfia, Aranzázu, La Merced, Manizales, Manzanares, Marmato, Marquetalia, Marulanda, Neira, Norcasia, Pácora, Pennsylvania, Riosucio, Salamina, Samaná, Supía, and Victoria. Additionally, media reported on 23 November that a landslide occurred in Puerto Valdivia municipality leaving 9 injured and 7 dead. On 21 November, media reported that 1,200 families were affected by heavy rains, in Colón. The municipality’s mayoral office is providing assistance to affected families by distributing essential items such as food, and gas and providing pediatric and adult medical consultations and vaccinations to over 300 residents sheltered in the Caño Muerto sector and in family homes in the town of La Fortuna.
