Hurricane Iota Updates

On 18 November 2020, the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) reported that all watches and warnings related to Hurricane Iota have been lifted and the storm is predicted to continue to weaken upon entering El Salvador. In El Salvador, media reported that 700 people residing in high risk and vulnerable areas of the region have been evacuated as a preventative measure; 1,000 shelters are available with the capacity to house about 30,000 people. More than 70,000 food packages have been delivered nationwide to residents who will be affected by Hurricane Iota. In Honduras, the Permanent Commission of Contingencies (COPECO) announced reports indicated 15 homes were destroyed and 23 homes were damaged. In addition, currently, 13,320 families have been evacuated to 636 shelters. With respect to COVID-19 prevention, the government has earmarked 235,000 masks for distribution to affected persons. In Nicaragua, media reported more than 45,000 people were evacuated due to Hurricane Iota (5,000 increase since the 17 November report). On 17 November 2020, media reported that due to heavy rainfall in Zulia state, 12 rivers overflowed affecting 25 sectors, 5,000 families, and left 3 dead. Government assistance to the impacted areas has been dispatched and residents have been urged to report all emergencies for assistance.
