On 12 December 2020, the National Coordinator for the Reduction of Disasters (CONRED), reported that the Santiaguito Volcano has increased its seismic activity and generated ash columns that reached 3,300 meters above sea level. Ash fall were reported in the following villages of San Felipe Municipality, Retalhuleu Department: Loma Linda, San Marcos Palajunoj, and possibly Las Marías village. On 12 December 2020, media reported heavy rain and an overflow of the Telembi river in Barbacoas Municipality, Nariño Department, Colombia affecting 1,500 families.
