Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (update)

On 20 April 2021, according to the University of the West Indies Seismic Research Center, Seismic activity at La Soufrière Volcano continued the pattern established after the explosive activity on 18 April with small long-period and hybrid earthquakes recorded. No volcano-tectonic earthquakes, rockfalls, or tremors have been recorded in the last 12 hours. The volcano continues to erupt. Its pattern of seismic activity over the last few days is typical of the growth and destruction of lava domes. Explosions with accompanying ashfall, of similar or larger magnitude, can occur with little or no warning. Additionally, during the daily press conference, it was reported that the Bamboo Range seismic station recorded a lahar at 4:00 A.M on South East of the Volcano, and that more are expected as the rainy seasons begin. According to the Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Shelters Report, as of 19 April, a total of 1,800 families are in private shelters and an additional 6,208 persons are currently being housed in 85 public shelters and 6,567 are in private shelters. Furthermore, the Ministry of Agriculture completed its assessment on the red zone, indicating total devastation of agricultural crops. The reports are available at: UWI Seismic Research, CDEMA SitRep #18, and VC3 Daily Press Conference
