Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (update)

On 16 April 2021, the University of the West Indies (UWI) Seismic Research Centre, reported an explosion from the La Soufrière Volcano at 6:15 A.M. The eruption column was estimated at roughly 8000 meters over sea level with an ash cloud seen moving towards the west of the island. The period between explosions has now lengthened to more than 40 hours. Additionally, according to the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) from St. Vincent and the Grenadines as of 15 April, GPS imaging shows a signal consistent with depressurization of the magma reservoir, however the volcano continues to erupt although explosive activity appears to have ended at this time. Its current pattern of seismic activity may indicate growth of a lava dome, but this has not yet been confirmed and Explosions and accompanying ashfall, of similar or larger magnitude, could restart in the future. Furthermore, the NEMO shelter report registers as of 15 April a total of 1,133 families have been displaced due to the volcanic activity of the La Soufrière Volcano, of which 4,136 are disbursed in 89 shelters and an additional 3,275 are sheltering in private houses. According to the daily live update for 16 April from Prime Minister Gonsalves, the Jennings water supply system has been cleaned and the cisterns (50 thousand gallons) have been filled, however water has to be treated prior to distribution. The Jennings system is expected to start distribution later this afternoon (16 April) reaching as far as Diamond Village in the south of the island, nevertheless, due to the lack of water in the last days, water will take longer to reach Diamond Village as the system supplies the passing settlements. The United States Embassy has coordinated evacuation of U.S. citizens in Saint Vincent, 6 April to Sint Maarten. Boarding on the Celebrity Reflection will begin at 7:00 A.M. It will depart Kingstown Port, St. Vincent at 1:00 P.M. The reports are available at:  UWI Seismic Research, NEMO La Soufrière Volvano Bulletin #64, VCT 15 April Shelter Report, Live Update from Prime Minister Gonsalves, and CDEMA SitRep No 14.
