Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, May 14-17, 2019.
HEARTS is the most important initiative for the prevention and control of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), with an emphasis on hypertension control and secondary prevention at the global level. HEARTS is spearheaded by the World Health Organization involving various global actors, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the United States (CDC) and the Resolve to Save Lives initiative, the International Society of Hypertension, International Society of Nephrology , the World Hypertension League, and the World Heart Federation and World Diabetes Federation, among others. In the Americas, the Pan American Health Organization guides the implementation of HEARTS with the leadership of the respective ministries of health of Argentina, Barbados, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Panama, Saint Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago, and, recently, the inclusion of Peru. Furthermore, Mexico is preparing to enter the network of countries implementing HEARTS. The HEARTS Global Initiative promotes the adoption of technical packages such as MPOWER for tobacco control, SHAKE for the reduction of salt consumption, REPLACE for the elimination of transfats, and HEARTS for the clinical management of conditions related to CVDs. These packages facilitate the implementation of the initiative and catalyze the fulfillment of the global goals related to noncommunicable diseases.
