Background information

  • In April 2024, building on the regional initiative “Empowered Communities to tackle AMR” that had issued a declaration in 2021, from communities and Civil society organizations, taking a stand against AMR in Latin America and the Caribbean, PAHO and ReAct Global teamed up to launch the campaign: “From people to leaders act on AMR now” ahead of the United Nations General Assembly High-Level Meeting on AMR, to amplify the voices of communities and civil societies worldwide and advocate for a whole-of-society response to AMR that recognizes the importance of community and civil society engagement within the UN declaration on AMR. This movement is meant to urge governments to deliver more ambitious commitments at the UNGA HLM 2024 and beyond, including prioritizing AMR on the political agenda, allocating resources to AMR national action plans with a focus on population in situations of vulnerability and One Health solutions, and meaningful and systematic community engagement in the AMR response.
  • The call for action is fundamentally a set of appeals from communities and civil society to governments around the world. It articulates urgent needs and actions that are deemed critical by those directly impacted by AMR (for e.g. access to vaccines, diagnostics, quality antimicrobial treatment; water, hygiene and sanitation; AMR impact awareness and education). The campaign has started with the global call for action, continued with engagement and outreach including signing of the call by CSOs (149 to date), coalition building and will culminate with the participation of CSO and community representatives at a side event of the HLM along with the handing in of the signed call to the president of the General Assembly.
