The Regional Task Force for the Reduction of Maternal Mortality invites you to the webinar launching of the Interagency Strategic Consensus for the Reduction of Maternal Mortality and Morbidity: Strategic Directions for the Decade 2020-2030, a document that calls on governments and strategic partners to prioritize the reduction of preventable maternal mortality in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) through the allocation of resources and the adoption of innovative, cost-effective strategies based on the latest available evidence.

Despite the progress made in the last decade, the region has seen a stagnation in the reduction of maternal mortality. Moreover, the COVID-19 pandemic may lead to a significant setback if urgent actions are not taken. The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has made estimates that allow us to imagine three maternal mortality scenarios in the framework of the COVID-19 pandemic: a minimum one, in which the regional Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) figures would go back about 5 years, a medium one, in which it could reach 13 years, and a maximum one, which could be retracted up to 20 years.

What is the Consensus?

The interagency strategic consensus recommends a series of priority measures to accelerate the reduction of maternal deaths and that will allow the creation of conditions of greater equity in access and universal coverage of quality sexual and reproductive health for women, girls, boys and girls. adolescents in the region.

What is the expected outcome of the webinar?
The meeting is expected to contribute to raising awareness of the need to reinvest and reprioritize maternal health and to present an updated analysis of the maternal mortality situation in the region and the different interventions, based on the best available evidence, to improve maternal health.

Representatives from United Nations agencies, governments and civil society will participate in the webinar to present the regional overview on maternal mortality, the priorities of the Strategic Consensus and examples of how these priorities have been implemented at a national level, followed by a questions and answers session.

What is the GTR?

It is an interagency mechanism formed by technical agencies of the United Nations, bilateral and multilateral cooperation organizations, non-governmental organizations and professional networks of the region created in 1998 whose mission is to promote collaborative work and regional synergies to implement policies and programs to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality in LAC.
