About the Hospital Safety Index (HSI)
The main objective of the HSI is to improve the level of preparedness for health emergencies and disaster response by identifying vulnerabilities in health facilities. It aims to generate an action plan for each hospital to ensure continuity of operations during emergencies or disasters, thereby facilitating more efficient early recovery. This initiative is one of the main disaster risk reduction strategies of the WHO and PAHO, and it is aligned with the seven goals and four priorities of the Sendai Framework 2015-2030.
About the course
PAHO launched the first version of this course in 2008. To ensure that resilient health facilities remain accessible and operate at maximum capacity, the course "Evaluation of Health Establishments using the Hospital Safety Index, Second Version" has been developed. This second version seeks to promote the reactivation of the Safe Hospitals initiative in the post-COVID-19 era and train evaluators for its implementation, based on regional and country experiences.
