60th Directing Council
Washington, D.C., 25-29 September 2023
Background
In 2019, the 57th Directing Council of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) approved a policy for an integrated and sustainable approach to communicable diseases in the Americas, known as the Elimination Initiative (EI), but the COVID-19 pandemic hindered actions at regional, national and local level and slowed down the pace towards the elimination of communicable diseases.
Over the past three years, we have witnessed countries in our region working together to combat the pandemic. Now, we must leverage this momentum to revitalize the PAHO Elimination Initiative and regain the progress that was temporarily hindered.
This briefing session will present country experiences and achievements in the elimination of communicable diseases highlighting best practices from the Region and seeks renewing commitment to the PAHO Elimination Initiative in the post-pandemic phase for a joint accelerated and urgent action to eliminate communicable diseases and related conditions in the Americas by 2030.
