General situation in endemic countries The last decade shows an overall downward trend of malaria morbidity and mortality rates in the Region of the Americas (Fig. 1). There were approximately 7,500 fewer confirmed cases of malaria between 2007 and 2017. Excluding Venezuela, in the same period, malaria-related deaths also decreased by almost half from 170 in 2007 to 88 in 2017 (Fig. 1).
