Presentation
Childhood obesity is taking alarming proportions in many countries and is a serious problem that must be urgently addressed. In the Sustainable Development Goals established by the United Nations in 2015, the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases are considered top priorities. Among the risk factors for noncommunicable diseases, obesity is of particular concern, as it may negate many of the health benefits that have contributed to improved life expectancy.
Progress in the fight against childhood obesity has been slow and uneven. In 2014 the Commission to End Childhood Obesity was established to review existing mandates and strategies and expand them to address gaps.
After consulting with more than 100 WHO Member States and reviewing nearly 180 comments online, the Commission developed a set of recommendations to effectively combat childhood and adolescent obesity in different global contexts.
