Integrating HPV testing in cervical cancer screening program: a manual for program managers (2016)

The World Health Organization (WHO) guideline for cervical cancer screening recommends HPV testing for cervical cancer screening (WHO, 2013). Many countries, however have already established cytology (Pap smear) based screening programs, and while the scientific evidence illustrates that HPV testing is more sensitive than the Pap smear, guidance is needed on how to modify traditional screening programs to incorporate HPV testing.

This guide, Integrating HPV Testing in Cervical Cancer Screening Programs: A Manual for Program Managers intends to fill this knowledge gap. It provides information on how to plan and implement a cervical cancer screening program, based on HPV testing as a primary screening test. The purpose is to provide managers with up-to-date information on HPV testing, and to facilitate strengthening cervical cancer screening programs. It provides information on the natural history of HPV, characteristics of HPV tests, and a summary of WHO recommendations on screening and treatment of precancerous cervical lesions (WHO, 2013). It also provides general information on HPV test-based cervical cancer screening program issues, such as costs, communication and education, practical laboratory information, and program monitoring. It includes information on the experiences and lessons from other countries that have already introduced HPV testing in national cervical cancer programs.
