The damage assessment and needs analysis (EDAN) by the health sector is a measure of great importance for adequate decision-making in disaster situations. This involves not only the health of the population but also the existing health conditions as a consequence of the event, in addition to the assessment of the state of health establishments.

Rapidly assessing the mental health situation after a disaster or emergency is integral to EDAN-Salud. It should not be seen as an isolated or parallel component to the analysis of the health situation of the affected population. Mental health assessment requires health information and the general context of the disaster. On the other hand, general health evaluations benefit and need information related to psychosocial factors.
