This progress report by the Director reviews the actual situation for the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) in the Americas and the efforts being made by Member Countries to eradicate the transmission of wild poliovirus from the Western Hemisphere by 1990.
It points out that less than three years are left before the target date and considerable efforts should be made if the goals are to be met. It is emphasized that momentum, interest and commitment on the part of many countries appear consistent with meeting the goal of eradication of polio by 1990. However, such commitment is not present in all countries and some critical program elements have not been adequately implemented.
