The Brasilia consensus on mental health gives the general concensus from the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) and the Ministry of Health at the “1st Regional Meeting of Users of Mental Health Service and their Families,” held in Brasilia, Brazil, on October 15-17, 2013. The meeting was convened with the objectives of:

(i) promoting the sharing of personal and institutional experiences on the autonomy and empowerment of users of mental health services and their families in the Region of the Americas, so as to promote their social organization and involvement in decisions related to mental health policies;

(ii) promoting
discussion and reflection on mental health public policies in the region, particularly those being developed in Brazil; and

(iii) empowering family members and users to assess the quality of mental health services and their respect for human rights.
