IHSLAC Articles and Photostories - Country in Focus: Nicaragua

In Nicaragua, the initiative focuses on 6 of the 17 national departments: Estelí, Jinotega, Madriz, Matagalpa, Nuevo Segovia and Puerto Cabezas, Autonomous Region of the North Caribbean. 

The initiative will support actions to strengthen efforts to improve the quality of care for mothers, children and adolescents, as well as the development of capacities to prevent the transmission of HIV / AIDS from mother to child. 

Other activities include strengthening the registry of maternal and neonatal morbidity, the development of perinatal and maternal guidelines, standards and care, as well as plans to prevent neglected communicable diseases such as Chagas disease.

The development of the teaching and learning process through recreational activities allows the protagonists to put into practice the knowledge acquired once they return to their communities.

The implementation of the Kangaroo Family strategy in maternity homes allows for better surveillance of the premature newborn, who is discharged once he reaches the optimal weight. In addition, the mother assumes the commitment to put into practice at home, to prevent the child from losing weight.

The community health network, composed of midwives, contributes to the promotion of health to strengthen the skills and abilities of the protagonists to achieve adequate physical and mental well-being.

Doña María Antonia Fornos, midwife for 30 years. Their ancestral wisdom and the new knowledge acquired in childbirth preparation and management during the puerperium, contribute to the care of women and the newborn, as well as the capture of the protagonists of their community.
