To prevent and control Chagas disease, we are all needed
World Chagas Disease Day is observed every April 14th to raise awareness about this disease.
This day invites us to reflect on the role we can all play in eliminating Chagas disease.
Historically, Chagas has primarily affected rural communities, where socio-environmental and cultural factors perpetuated its presence.
PAHO has integrated Chagas into its Diseases Elimination Initiative, with a special focus on stopping mother-to-child transmission.
In 2018, in the Americas, it was estimated:
7,5 millons people were infected with Chagas disease.
More than 100 million people in the Americas were at risk.
Over 1,5 million people suffered from Chagasic heart disease.
9,100 children are born infected every year.
