Anniversary Photo Exhibit: Health Emergencies

Celebrating 120 Years of Solidarity in Advancing Health and Well-Being, Leaving No One Behind

The objective of PAHO's work in Health Emergencies is to increase the health sector resilience to emergencies and disasters. Our priority is to deliver rapid, predictable, and comprehensive support to Member States in terms of prevention, risk reduction, preparedness, surveillance, response, and early recovery in case of any threat to human health, including outbreaks or disasters caused by natural phenomena, biological, chemical, or radiological agent, human activities, conflicts, or any other hazard.

Over 20 years, one out of four disasters globally have occurred in Latin America and the Caribbean, resulting in 289,055 deaths, and impacting nearly 277 million people, with estimated losses of over US$ 1.27 trillion.

When national capacities are overwhelmed, PAHO is ready to lead and coordinate the international health response to contain disasters, including outbreaks, and to provide effective relief and recovery to affected populations.

The Region of the Americas is a region at risk. More than half of its total land area is exposed to natural phenomena that pose potential threats to essential infrastructure and the health of the population.

Substantially reducing the damage to health facilities and the interruption of their services calls for strengthening the resilience of national health systems and integrating emergency and disaster risk management in all levels of care, always considering the specific needs of population groups disproportionally affected by disasters, such as persons with disabilities, indigenous populations, women, children, and elderlies, among others, to ensure that no one is left behind.
