On May 4, 2023, COVID-19 was established as an ongoing health issue. However, COVID-19 still represents a global health threat, and we need to reach the groups that are not yet vaccinated against it.
It is also time to focus on preparing better for future emergencies and rebuilding better for a healthier and sustainable future. Furthermore, the Region needs to tackle the significant setbacks in health progress generated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
PAHO's essential leadership and coordination during the COVID-19 pandemic has contributed to saving lives and protecting the most vulnerable population groups—including health workers—in all 51 countries and territories of the Americas.
PAHO appreciates the donors who have provided funding to fight COVID-19 in the Region. Your donation enabled us to support individual countries and territories in the region to scale up their readiness and response operations to fight the pandemic.
Your donation enabled us to:
Help countries and territories organize and prepare their health systems to cope with the rapid rise and resurgence of COVID-19 cases while maintaining other essential health services.
Share the latest scientific knowledge, epidemiological data and technical guidance with governments, health workers, and communities to guide public health actions.
Detect, track and slow the spread of COVID-19, by supporting countries’ surveillance, testing, contact tracing and laboratory capacity.
Support research and facilitate countries’ participation in genome sequencing and clinical trials of new medicines.
Send essential supplies, including personal protective equipment (PPE), to frontline health workers.
Deliver COVID-19 vaccines safely and effective where they are needed the most.
PAHO's 2023 Health Emergency Appeal
The prolonged COVID-19 crisis exacerbated pre-existing vulnerabilities and worsened cumulative humanitarian needs throughout the Region, fueling some of the main drivers of internal displacement and migration. PAHO’s Health Emergencies Appeal 2023 highlights the regional priorities of the Organization to support the protection of communities and populations affected by acute, prolonged, and protracted health emergencies throughout the Americas, starting with individuals in situations of vulnerability.
